The campaign claims that U.S. intelligence has briefed Donald Trump on assassination threats from Iran. According to the Republican presidential candidate’s campaign, it was informed of “real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him with the aim of destabilizing the United States.” It did not provide further details, and it was not clear if these were new threats or previously reported ones.
Trump Warned by U.S. Intelligence
The Iranian government had not made any comment on requests for comment, however, the government has previously denied accusations of interference in American affairs by the U.S. Trump posted on X (formerly Twitter) regarding “big threats on my life by Iran.” He said Iran tried already but failed and would attempt again. He described an attack on him as a “death wish by the attacker” and thanked Congress for approving additional funding for the Secret Service.
Campaign communications director Steven Cheung said the “intelligence officials have identified that these continued and coordinated attacks have increased over the last few months.” Law enforcement agencies were working on ways to protect Trump from such hacks as well as ensure that the election doesn’t get affected.
An Office of the Director of National Intelligence spokesman said the briefing had taken place, but he declined to be specific. The incident comes on the heels of another earlier in the day, July 13, in which Trump was attacked and one person killed during a shooting that erupted at a rally in Pennsylvania. The motives for the attack are still unknown.
After that incident, the reports showed in U.S. media officials claimed to have received intelligence about an Iranian plot against the former president. Officials of Iran CBS News, a partner of the BBC in United States reported said this was nothing but “malicious” allegations.
“If they do ‘assassinate President Trump,’ which is always a possibility, I hope that America obliterates Iran, wipes it off the face of the Earth,” Trump wrote on Truth Social at the time, adding if this doesn’t happen, American leaders would be seen as “gutless cowards.”
According to reports by U.S. intelligence officials, Iran allegedly threatened to assassinate Trump when he ran for the presidential election of 2024. Such a threat was reportedly conveyed to Trump during the tense phase between the U.S. and Iran, as it happened primarily during the Trump’s administration, where he presided over most policy decisions that led to leaving the Iran nuclear deal and imposed harsh sanctions on the nation.
Intelligence suggests that Iranian operatives may hit him for his strong words against the regime. This has added more concerns towards Trump’s safety as he still keeps holding big campaign events throughout the US.
The Trump campaign had responded to this level of threat by beefing up security details surrounding him. Above these threats, however, Trump was unmoved, insisting that he cannot be threatened and would carry on his campaign activities as planned. “We will not let fear dictate our actions. The fight for our country’s future is too important,” declared Trump.
The situation highlights the ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting U.S. domestic politics, with Trump’s candidacy drawing both strong support and opposition. Analysts believe these threats could become part of Trump’s campaign narrative, potentially strengthening his base by framing him as standing up to external enemies.
The more the Trump campaign rallies and continues public appearances, the most likely is that these intelligence reports shall sway his election strategy and opinion of his followers. This sce
