A 17-year-old was in court after being charged with the attempted murder and robbery of a San Francisco 49ers player, who was shot Saturday. The teen, whose case is heard in juvenile court, was apprehended near the scene in San Francisco’s Union Square. The shooting victim, 23-year-old Pearsall, was photographed at the scene with a bullet wound to his chest. He was treated at a hospital and released Sunday.

Pearsall, a wide receiver, is supposed to miss several games of his debut season with the 49ers, but the team’s general manager described his survival as “nothing short of miraculous.” John Lynch told reporters on Tuesday that Pearsall was doing “remarkably well” considering the circumstances. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Pearsall had been signing autographs before heading to Union Square, where the incident occurred.

Police said Pearsall was approached for his “costly watch,” and a struggle ensued in which he was shot. Video posted online of the scene shows paramedics walking Pearsall to an ambulance, where he sat on a gurney, clutching a shirt over his chest. His mother later posted on social media that he’d been shot in the chest and that the bullet had emerged from his back. She wrote, “Thanks be to God, it missed his vital organs.”

Police said the suspect was hurt too, but his condition was not reported. The suspect, 17, was not named because of his age. He is from Tracy, a town 60 miles east of San Francisco. Police acted quickly. Pearsall was taken to the hospital. The suspect was arrested in the area, armed with the stolen watch and a gun.

At the teen’s first court appearance, the courtroom was packed with journalists and other members of the community. The charges against this teen are severe: armed robbery, aggravated assault, and attempted murder; the primary issue the judge dealt with during the hearing was setting bail or denying it and thus denying him release while awaiting a trial.

The prosecutor pointed out the crime’s premeditation and its use of a firearm as he boldly declared, “This case throws light upon an urgent need to tackle youth violence and the dangerous influence of materialism.” He insisted on justice and strict prevention to avoid anything similar from happening again in the future.

The defense, however, pleaded for clemency, pointing to the teenager’s trying circumstances and lack of proper guidance. “This is a young person who made a terrible decision because of unfortunate circumstances,” said the defense lawyer. “Our priority is rehabilitation and dealing with the root causes of his actions.”

The incident has given way to a larger discussion of the impacts of wealth and materialism in shaping behaviors among youth, as well as the requirement for more interventions into the lives of youth at risk. Community leaders are making pleas for increased funding in youth programs and mental health to help stem such incidents.

In the wake of such an awful shootout, many reflect on personal and society-affected implications. Pearsall’s teammates and closest friends rally around him, focusing on resilience and recovery but not losing hope for justice, as stated by one of the teammates: “We stand by our friend and teammate through this time, are grateful for his recovery, and are hopeful that justice will be served.

The case will probably keep receiving much attention, but so far it has focused only on Pearsall’s recovery and tries to prevent the root causes of youth violence in the hope that the incident will bring a positive change in the community.
