A software update from American anti-virus company CrowdStrike affected Microsoft. Due to this, from 5 am to 8 pm on Friday (July 19), 95% of the computers around the world running on Microsoft’s operating system came to a standstill for about 15 hours.

All over the world, essential services like airports, flights, trains, hospitals, banks, restaurants, digital payments, stock exchanges, TV channels and supermarkets came to a halt. The maximum impact was seen at the airport. 3% i.e. about 4,295 flights had to be canceled worldwide.

In America alone, 1100 flights were canceled and 1700 were delayed. Its effect started appearing at 10:40 am Indian time. Huge crowd was seen at major airports of the country including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru. Due to halt of online services, flight boarding passes were given by hand at many airports. However, by evening many services started returning to normal.

Due to such widespread impact, it has become the biggest IT crisis in history. This is also being called ‘digital pandemic’. Microsoft had given this information at around 5 in the morning. However, Apple and Linux users were not affected by this.

Computers all over the world started restarting automatically, the screen turned blue.

Microsoft's

CrowdStrike software update caused a message to appear on the computer screen with a blue background. This is called Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). The Blue Screen of Death is a critical error screen that appears on Windows operating systems. When this error occurs, the computer restarts automatically. There is also a possibility of losing data.

After this outage, Microsoft immediately said that it is a “third party issue”. In other words – it wasn’t his fault. Microsoft had no ‘Plan B’ to get rid of the problem. She kept waiting for the cyber security firm itself to remove it.

This is a dangerous situation. Critical components of the economic system are highly dependent on Microsoft operating systems. It is not that there are no alternatives. Many companies use ‘Linux’ and ‘Make’. But airlines and other industries were assuming that Microsoft could not go wrong.

Now the time has come to take the development of alternative operating systems seriously in the country. Software development and creation of financial technology systems like UPI show our capability. 95% of computers in the world run on Microsoft’s operating system. This ‘monopoly’ is dangerous. There is a need to find an alternative to this.
