The interest of Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun lay in how various cell types arise. He discovered microRNAs, a new class of small RNA molecules that plays important roles in gene regulation.
His groundbreaking discovery revealed a completely novel principle in the regulation of gene expression that turned out to be especially significant for multicellular organisms, including humans. It is known today that the human genome contains more than a thousand microRNAs.

The awards will be announced between 7 and 14 October, and an amount of 11 million Swedish crowns will be given in these awards.
