Nobel Prize 2024 Winners: The two winners of the Nobel Prize for Physiology for 2024 have been announced. The Nobel Academy of the Karolinska Institute declared this on Monday (October 7, 2024).

This is the 115th Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine awarded since 1901. Of the 229 winners, only 13 are women. The Nobel Prize in Physics for 2024 will be announced on Tuesday, followed by the Chemistry prize on Wednesday.

Why these scientists got this award?

According to an official statement, this prize was awarded to scientists for the discovery of a fundamental principle that controls gene activity. The interest of Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun lay in how various cell types arise. He discovered microRNAs, a new class of small RNA molecules that plays important roles in gene regulation.

His groundbreaking discovery revealed a completely novel principle in the regulation of gene expression that turned out to be especially significant for multicellular organisms, including humans. It is known today that the human genome contains more than a thousand microRNAs.

Their astounding discovery unveiled a new dimension of gene regulation entirely. MicroRNAs have turned out to be fundamentally important to the development and function of the organisms.

How much reward do you get?

The awards will be announced between 7 and 14 October, and an amount of 11 million Swedish crowns will be given in these awards. Each Nobel Prize can be awarded to a maximum of three people who will share the prize money. Like every year, the Medicine Prize is the first in the series of Nobel Prizes, the most prestigious awards in the field of science, literature and humanitarian endeavours, while the remaining five awards will be announced in the coming days.

Catalin Carico and Drew Weissman were awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Both were rewarded for their discoveries, leading to the development of an effective mRNA vaccine against COVID-19.
